Where do you start with search engine optimization? If you are starting from scratch, the best place to start is to Google for search engine optimization (SEO) and read some of the free information that will come up in the links that seem to cover the subject in depth.
But here is a short introduction that will get you going quickly. First, there are two types of SEO:

Off-page SEO
Start with on-page optimization
Both are important, and since on-page optimization is fairly simple, it is best to start there. At the top of each web page is the title tag, which looks like this:

This is less important these days, but some minor search engines still take note, so put in a few keywords - words or phrases people use to search for your product. Don't put in more than about six keywords or keyphrases.
The page layout is also important. Nowadays, the search engines like to see a lot of items on a page. Therefore it is a good idea to have latest news in a sidebar - a narrow column at the side of the page - and an rss feed somewhere else. A video or audio section is also helpful.
Keyword density
The other important factor is keyword density. This is the number of times the main phrase defining the subject of the site is included. For example, in a site about search engine optimization, the main keyword would be search engine optimization, and the secondary keyword might be off line search engine optimization. By the way, these are far too generalized key phrases to use these days as there are millions of pages using them.
Anyway, the main keyword should be 1-3% of the word count. If you go much higher than this you will be considered to be keyword stuffing. The secondary keyword should appear less often, maybe around 1%, but there should always be fewer of these words than the main keyword.
Each page of the website should have at least 300 words on it . The word count, which you can find in Word or OpenOffice, should be 300- 600 words.
