Online marketing starts with your website

White hat SEO (or ethical SEO if you like) is often argued to be not as successful as 'black hat' SEO. Proponents of black hat optimisation have even gone so far as saying that using black hat they can easily out rank any white hat SEO'd site.

Whilst it may be true that Black Hat techniques certainly can have a more rapid and dramatic effect on raising the Google ranking of a site, this has to be weighed against the fact that if discovered the site may well be penalised, or banned altogether.

This is not even considering any moral issues with black hat SEO. Even if the shady SEO techniques used are not detectable by Google at present, some black hatters seem to take that to mean that they can get away with dodgy dealings...

This argument is flawed! Sooner or later the chances are that Google will detect their exploits, and act accordingly. Recently for example, Google decided to try to target people that are selling links for the purpose of manipulating PageRank for their clients. Many people have since lost their own PageRank because of this.

Link selling is often considered grey hat by many, so imagine what would happen to a site that got caught committing what Google would consider real black hat! (Such as cloaked pages etc)

Even if white hat SEO techniques may take longer to have an effect, long term ethical SEO is the best option for most sites. Positions gained through ethical SEO are more likely to be maintained for longer, and bring you better quality traffic. - But that's just my opinion as a white hatter.

Three Things You Must Do Before You Submit To Article Directories

To all writers and non-writers out there, now is the time to start digging up those creative writing skills. With modern communication technology comes the popularity of information-based marketing, which is one of the oldest and most effective techniques in getting targeted prospects to sites and converting them into buyers. This is

Article marketing is one of the very best ways that you can build a six figure income. I am sure if you have just read that previous statement you will want to read it again.

You may have written a few articles and gotten some results, but not realized how powerful this method of marketing actually is. However, it is a numbers game and the more articles that you have out there the higher your number of subscribers and sales.

So let us look at how you generate money from article marketing in forensic detail. You need to write articles focusing on your niche market and submit them to all the article directories. Here you will get free search engine traffic because these directories have a very high page rank. You will include a link to your squeeze page in your resource box. When somebody reads your article and likes what you have to say they will click through to your website and subscribe to your newsletter. Using your autoresponder you can follow up and convert them from a subscriber into a paid customer.

Now one of the biggest problems with article marketing is that you need thousands of articles to generate a six figure income. Also writing and submitting them to directories takes a very long time as this is extremely time intensive. So for most people they simply do not do the volume that is required to achieve a six figure income.

Now the expert article marketers outsource everything. They may have started doing everything themselves to get everything going and generate a profit, but once they start earning a decent income they hire people to write the articles and submit them to the different directories. Using sites like Elance you can easily find people to do all of this and I know of one article marketer who pays a dollar for every article that gets written.

Viral marketing is a methods of list building

Affiliate article marketing is your chance to distinguish yourself from all of the other affiliates for the same product or service.

Writing articles about the products or services you represent as an affiliate gives you the chance to create a certain amount of trust with your prospect. A well written piece that is informative provides information about your professionalism and the product you are representing.

If you do not respect your reader and give them an article that has poor grammar, spelling mistakes and NO valuable information about the product or service, you have lost ANY chance at getting the reader to either finish reading your article or clicking through for more information.

* Honest product reviews on the products you represent are always welcome.
* Videos showing how the product works are priceless, especially if they are of a REAL user and not a commercially made advertisement.
* The consumer wants to be ensured that their problems are going to be solved so itemizing the benefits of the product that are NOT listed on the product sales page or in commercials helps create credibility.

The affiliate articles you write are your chance to sell without selling.

You do this by capturing their interest with the title, building on that interest with the first paragraph, create a desire in them for more information with the body text then give them a call to action at the end where they can have the desire for more information sated.

There are going to be a LOT of other affiliates for the product you represent and not all of them do affiliate article marketing. Some may dabble at it but aren't willing to put themselves, their personality and their personal integrity into their business.

Take the time to know and understand your product before you write your first affiliate marketing article and you will be separating yourself from the herd. Be honest and find a marketing approach that differs from others and you'll be exploiting a niche within that market.

The bottom line is always respect the reader, respect yourself and be a prolific writer if you want to win the affiliate article marketing war with other affiliates in your niche.

When writing articles and posting them on directories, there are 5 things that you can do that will add to the effectiveness and conversions of you articles. Effectiveness being measured by how many people read the article, and then how many people visit your website as a result of the article.

First, enough emphasis cannot be put on the resource box. The bottom line is this is the reader's direct link back to you. The better the information, the easier it is to get to your site, and having a firm call to action can all have a significant impact on the final piece of the puzzle when trying to get targeted traffic to your website and build your opt in subscriber list.

Think about it for a second. You can have a title that not only has the perfect key words, but has the perfect burning question that everyone is dying to know. In your article you could masterfully paint a picture of the importance of the topic and then give the perfect response that will help your readers not only know where to start and the steps that they need to begin, but in addition gives them complete confidence that you are the person that they want to have help them because you are obviously in tune with them and their needs.

At this point, they are scrolling down as fast as humanly possible to get to the resource box that is going to lead them to you and help them achieve their dreams and goals and when they get there all they find is one sentence with your name and a link that doesn't work properly because you put a period at the end of your web address.

You do not want this to be the reason that keeps people from being able to do business with you. Why they should contact you, a call to action and two to three full length, which means include the http://, web addresses is a strong start with your resource box, if you want to learn more about how to make your resource box as effective as possible, come sign up for my ezine.

So you know you want to optimize your website for a certain keyword or maybe for many keywords at once if you are that good.

Question is, how many backlinks do you need? Do you keep getting backlinks forever?

Both answers to those questions can be found by doing some research about the website that is number one for your chosen keywords. In other words your top competitor.

You need to know how many backlinks they have. Not how many link exchanges they made, but the total amount of all the backlinks they have.

That is the average amount of backlinks you need for your own website to outrank them. Sometimes you may need more and other times less than what they have. If for example the backlinks they have are all one way links, even though it is rare but it may be the case, then you may need more backlinks then they have, if you are going to make link exchanges only. That is because one way links are more powerful than link exchanges.

But in general the amount of backlinks they have is a clear indication of how many you require more or less. It is always a great idea to get both one way links and link exchanges.

Both have their positive sides.

For example if you have made a thousand link exchanges in the post two months and you launch a new website. You can email all those webmasters so they make a link exchange with your new site. That is a thousand link exchanges made easy. That is one of the positive things of making link exchanges. There are scripts and tools that keep track of all your link partners information. Some have an option that allows you to email them all at once.

The other good thing with link exchanges is that you can put up a link exchange submission form and you get links automatically. Many webmasters will simple submit their link and you approve or reject it. Once your website start getting more traffic your site will start getting a ton of these links, with no work on your part. You will also get many link exchange request by email, and you should not reject any link if possible. Links are like diamonds in seo.

So as you can see you need to outrank your competitors who are in the number one position if you want to get the number one position. You should aim for that position, it is the position which gets the most traffic. Websites on page two for example, do not get any traffic at all. Websites on page one do get all the traffic, but the site in page one which is the number one position gets almost all of the traffic.

Generally beginners do not have an exact idea what they want. They just want to start doing seo, they get some backlinks and check rankings in all search engines and so forth.

A webmaster who knows what he is doing, will pick up a keyword or keywords, aim for the number one position in one particular search engine and dominates that position. And every wise webmasters will choose Google, since it provides the best customers. It also means you analyze the competitor who is number one in Google.

There is no need to check where you rank in msn or yahoo or other search engines. Simple because if you know what you are doing, you choose the right keywords and you know for certain that you are going to get the number one position. When that happens you can get another one in number one position, not relying on other search engines for traffic, but getting what you want and which is the best thing.

So you aim big not small. Checking were you rank in msn is like you are aiming too small, you are expecting traffic from msn and make money. You want the best spot in Google. The other search engine still provide you traffic, because if you rank well in Google probably you are also ranked well in other search engines. So think big once you understand well how seo works. Aim for the best to get the best.

Viral marketing is a methods of list building

There are multiple methods of list building, and if you are just getting started, until you have gained mastery over one or two methods, it is advisable to use multiple methods of list building strategies. You’ll see every step of the process, no matter how small, in exacting detail so

First a web directory is web site that specializes in finding, categorizing and listing links to other resources on the World Wide Web. Owners of web sites can submit their sites for review and possible inclusion. Those sites are then reviewed for relevancy and site content to determine if the site would have value to the other internet surfers.

By using a Web Directory your site can gain backlinks which are like doorways to your website for traffic to flow. They are also considered votes of quality for search engine rankings which brings additional targeted traffic through search related actions. Web Directory links create unique and topically relevant backlinks to your site.

The thing to note is that all links are not created equal. The fundamental difference in directories is free vs paid. The differences between the two are like night and day or BMW and skateboard.

Free Directory

What you get with free directories are an extremely crowded directory where your link will get lost in a crowd of low quality links, less traffic from the directory due to less visibility, much longer time between submission and acceptance, very time consuming as you typically need to submit to hundreds of these to get the value of one link from a quality paid directory and your listing will typically get placed with listings for low quality spam filled sites.

Let's just face facts, most people start a business to generate revenue and a directory is a business. With directories that allow for free submissions the owners look to generate revenue from the site in other ways and those other ways will decrease the quality of the directory.

One way they generate revenue on free directories is by installing adsense on it. Those adsense advertisements compete with the listings on the directory for the visitor traffic and decrease the value of a link in the directory.

The other common way to generate revenue for a free directory is to sell advertising space on it. The idea being to use the lure of a low quality free link on the directory to draw traffic in to see the paid advertisements like site wide sponsored links, site featured links, site wide footer links, site wide partner links and they can call them other things also. Such as our network, friends and the list goes on.

The fact is that search engines devalue web sites that sell placement of site wide links on them and that severely limits the value of a listing on those directories.

Pay for Review Directory

Some of the things which a pay for review directory will bring you and that you should look for are a directory that is maintained by professionals, rich in content with articles and quality resources/listings, unique design with additional features such as deep linking options, quick review times usually 24 to 48 hours and a directory that is focused on providing a destination resource for visitors which generates traffic.

The focus to be a destination resource is easily spotted by features and content. Does the directory provide something in addition to a place to submit links? Is there a blog with content in it? Are there articles posted within the directory category structure? Are there other features that are just there for visitor's enjoyment such as an art gallery?

In addition there should not be any site wide links for sponsors, there should not be distracting/traffic bleeding adsense. A link from a quality paid directory has more value than free links. They are seen as a higher quality endorsement of the sites listed there. It is our hope that this will help you identify a directory that is worth submitting to from one that is not.

The Authority Web Directory is a vital resource in every online-marketing campaign. Begin your link building effort there, and check for additional resources amongst our listings in the Authority Directory of Directories section.

Are you an Article Marketer? If so, you know that it pays to write hundreds of articles and post them on the web with your URL attached to the bottom.

But did you also know? When you include TWO URLS in the resource box of your article, you're turning it into watered down orange juice.

Let's call one of your URLs "OJ" and the other "water."

You put two in, now your orange juice is only HALF as juicy as it was before. And the power of your brand, "OJ," is FIFTY PERCENT diluted.

And you may think it's tasty, but that's only HALF the vitamins of undiluted orange juice.

(Said in Plain English):

For those who run multiple websites:

How do you choose which URL to place in your article resource box?

As a marketing-minded individual, I choose the URL that's most appropriate for the audience.

For example, If I'm selling, say, orange juice, and my one site is "Freshpicked.com" but the other is called "dreamingincolor.com"... guess what?

I'm not including that second URL in the resource box... no matter how much I want everyone to notice how many websites I'm running.

I notice that many people include more than one URL in their article resource box, and I advocate strongly against it.

Even if the reader "knows you from around the internet," you are not attracting people to one website if you give them two options of where to click.

If you give ONE option, and someone clicks, they can explore the potentially many pages of one website, and let the info sink in and then burn your name into your head.

If you give them two, you've diluted the power of your brand by FIFTY PERCENT.

Do you think this helps to build a strong case for your brand? I don't.

People are NOT going to click TWICE.

They're just not, so don't give them a distraction with your two-URL-having resource box.

Don't do it.

Don't water down your orange juice.

Article Marketing - Quality For Consumers

If you look around the Internet there are several recommended styles of article marketing so how do you decide which is the right way for you? On the one hand there are those who swear by writing several articles a day and submitting them to as many directories as they can. Then there are those who write one article and either use software to spin them into several articles or make small changes like title and first paragraph and submit the similar articles to the same sites. Then there are those who write one quality article daily, weekly or monthly and just submit to a few sites.

All of those ways of article marketing may work, but which works the best? Lets just go through the different ways.

1. Most of us do not have the time to write several articles a day and if they are about the same subject, intending to promote one particular site those articles can become repetitive and lose quality to quantity. Of course some people can write several good articles a day but I do not think that I am one of them.

2. Spinning articles might be a great time saver, but when you look at the results of spinning they can be laughable. The articles often do not make sense to the reader and can be difficult to understand in much the same way as badly translated articles. Many directories do not want those articles; I know that I do not want articles on my site that visitors may have difficulty in understanding.

3. Changing the first paragraph and or the title of an article and submitting it to different sites is great, that means there is not so much of a duplicate content issue. Submitting the altered versions of the same article to the same directories is not on. Last week a joker submitted the same article to my directory with slightly different titles 4 times using 4 different accounts. As if I was not going to notice the similarities when I looked at the list of articles waiting for approval!

4. Then there is quality and submitting to fewer sites. A quality article is a pleasure to approve. I enjoy reading the article, I know that the quality of my site is going to improve and I know that the quality articles are going to bring in more traffic to my site. I also know that a quality article does not need to be submitted to hundreds of sites or spun. A quality article will be picked up on by publishers and replicated pretty darn quick.

You can guess which article marketing style I prefer; its quality all the way. Looking at number 4 I sound like a proper know it all. I do not think that I know everything but I do know what my site stats tell me. The author articles that get the most hits are nearly always the articles that I have regarded as high quality, or have been interesting enough to read all the way through.

I have different ways of defining quality that may make me seem contrary, but I have always looked at things in different ways. A business colleague calls me a lateral thinker, I think he means a pain in the b**t!

Quality that is extremely well written, but on occasion no matter how well an article is written if the content is dry and boring the article is not going to fly for the majority of readers unless it contains specific information. I do not claim to be an extremely good writer, I think that I am an adept writer who can occasionally pull off unexpected great results almost by accident. I have had enough of those accidents to be able to figure out why those articles are hitting the spot and why articles such as this one is unlikely to produce masses of hits.

One of my accidents was an article about where I live. I wrote it as an example because I wanted members of my travel site to write about where they live. It started out as an article about a regular town and without initially intending to I added paragraphs about places of interest and tourist spots within 10 miles. It dawned on me after writing the article that although I live in an industrial town that would not be considered on it's own a tourist centre, like most places there are tourist spots close enough by to include a mention in an article.

That article does better for hits than most articles of my own and those of authors on my sites that have been especially written for article marketing. I asked myself why and came up with 2 reasons. One was that I had added a good variety of keywords and phrases without thinking about it. The other reason I suspect is that the article is unique, very different to any other travel article that I have seen out there. It is also obvious that I know the place well whereas most article marketing travel articles don't give you a sense of the authors knowing the places that they write about and show little personality.

Another accident was an article written a month ago about my bad experience with a spyware fraud. I was so cheesed off that I turned to writing to make myself feel better. I have never known an article get so many hits in such a short time. It has been picked up by a lot of webmasters, bloggers and ezines and I am sure it still has plenty of scope. I have even seen it on some geek sites, now that's something I never thought would happen to an article of mine!

I think that the article is doing well because it is offering information written from obvious personal experience that people want and need and those people have had the common sense to do a search before being scared into parting with their money.

The top 2 articles on my directory every month are my own scam warnings. They are only on a couple of my sites so the hits are not spread between zillions of article directories. Again I am providing information that people want and need. Neither of the articles were written for the purpose of article marketing and a variety of keywords and phrases happened naturally.

So to me a quality article is reasonably well written, packed with information written from experience that people want or need, unique or as different to other articles as possible and showing some personality.

The fatal flaw in my accidents is that I have not used the articles to promote money making ventures, just my sites in general. I will have to get a grip and accidentally make some money from them!

I'll end this far too long article by including a quote from a forum that made me think. 'Thats a major problem I see in article directories -- its so difficult to find good content in them that they are not nearly as useful to article consumers as they could be.'

Have you ever heard about stories on those online entrepreneurs who hit it big after getting a #1 rank in several popular search engines? You must be wondering what it would take for you to achieve that #1 spot in the search engine result pages (SERPs). Search Engine Optimization, or commonly known as SEO plays an important role to ensure that your business gets the best possible search engine ranking. This will eventually leads to increased sales for your online company.

So, what is exactly Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search engine optimization is the process of amending the content and the meta-information (i.e. Meta-information includes certain HTML tags such as title, heading, emphasized text, keyword and description meta-tags, as well as the internal [links between pages on the same site] and external [links between pages on different sites] link structure of a web site). This is to improve the search engine ranking of the page.

What will be the sales impact if my website is being listed as one of the High Search Engine Rank? Do you know that Internet market research estimates that between 70% and 90% of online shoppers use search engines to find a specific product or service. As such, you can see how effective search engine optimization can boost your revenues.

There are a total of three metrics to forecast online sales. They are the average ticket, the conversion rate, and the amount of web site traffic. Lets me explain each of the metrics to you. The average ticket is the amount of money spent by a customer on a typical transaction. Typically, bookstores have low average tickets while on the other hand computer and electronics stores have high average tickets.

Web Site traffic is measured by the number of site visitors. It is normally expressed as the total number of page views per month.

Conversion rate is expressed as a percentage and was calculated through the number of sales divided by the number of page.

As such, achieving a high search engine rank will definitely increase the number of page views, and could therefore increase sales. Bear in mind that a high search engine rank will produce a measurable increase in traffic only if there is significant marketplace interest in your product / service. Note that search engine optimization is not going to help to produce measurable results if there is very little demand on your product or service. Lets us look into this way, the #1 spot in search engine result pages is not particularly impressive if only two people search for your product or service each month.

What is the role of keywords being used in the Search Engine Optimization?

Keywords are words or phrases users provide to search engines to locate information. Search engines examine page content to determine whether a specific page is relevant for a particular search word or phrase. Thus, effective keyword selection is one of the keystones of search engine optimization.

Each keyword is characterized by supply and demand. Supply refers to the number of search engine result pages and demand refers to the number of searches.

The easiest way to improve search engine rank is to select keywords that have favorable supply-demand characteristics; that is, ones with a relatively high demand and a relatively low supply. It is much more difficult to improve the search engine position of a page on a high supply, competitive keyword.

Good keywords should be relevant to your product line and your line of business. For example, a #1 rank for health supplement product is worthless if you sell Health equipment. A potential customer will find your page, quickly discover that you don't sell any Health supplement product, and promptly go elsewhere. In effect, the conversion rate for irrelevant search engine hits is very close to zero.

Choosing a set of target keywords is the first step in search engine optimization. The second step is using them in the body, title, headings, and meta-tags of a page.

Do not overdo it by including target keywords in the text of the page. The keywords should fit smoothly into the surrounding text. Search engines are smart enough to detect excessive keyword density, or too many keywords stuffed into very little supporting text. It will definitely reduce your page ranking accordingly.

The title tag should contain information that describes the page. Unless you operate a multi-national corporation that is already a household name, your company's name should not be a descriptive title. Most search engines use the title tag as the first line of your listing in the search engine result pages.

Incorporate keywords into the headings on the page, as well as into emphasized sections (bold or large text). Even though search engines are de-emphasizing descriptive meta-tags, include keywords in them nevertheless. The description meta-tag should have an accurate description of your page, and the keywords meta-tag should contain a set of keywords (separated by commas) that list key concepts mentioned on the page.

This will help you to understand the basics of search engine optimization and it is an important first step in creating an optimized, well-positioned web site.

This is

Web site traffic building is one of the most important things you can do to your web site. You see, without traffic, your web site really is not effective someone has to get to your web site before you can make any money or educate someone whatever is the goal of your web site.

So how do I web site traffic build?

I use three techniques primarily.

1) Article marketing for search engine placements. I write articles and submit them to a list of about 100 article directories that generally have a high page rank. This allows my web pages to gain a high page rank, and therefore my pages come up high in natural search engine rankings. When this happens, I get web site traffic built for me, no additional trouble at all.

2) Article writing for direct traffic. Now with this technique, I write articles like this one and submit them to only one web site http://www.ezinearticles.com. The reason I only submit these articles here is that I get 10 times more traffic, at minimum, from this site than from any other web sites out there. So in the time it takes me to submit to 10 more article sites, I can easily write another article and I make more money that way.

3) My own list! I think that this is one area where people forget that they can get traffic their very own list. I regularly send people to my web pages. Imagine if you had a Adsense optimized blog set up and each of your list subscribers visited that page every day how much more money would you make online?

Viral marketing is a methods of list building

There are multiple methods of list building, and if you are just getting started, until you have gained mastery over one or two methods, it is advisable to use multiple methods of list building strategies. You’ll see every step of the process, no matter how small, in exacting detail so

Ever feel like you are at a loss for content? I will be honest with you, I don't. Right now I am in the process of writing 100 articles on article marketing. But, I do find myself getting distracted. Sometimes, I think I will get bored and won't be able to finish, but I have found a few ways that helped me avoid these problems so far.

First of all, a lack of content ideas to me is just crazy. I sign up for everything I can put my name and email address in. I get two email's a day from Armand Morin about his new big release on the 18th. I get two emails a day from Max Steingart about his instant messenger lead conversion program. I get two emails a day from Sean Mize, the author pretty well known for his article marketing.

The point is that there is a wealth of topics and information out there and everyone is dying to tell you about theirs. I could pick any one of the names above or 50 other names, and write 10 articles just by going through their emails and talking about much of the content that they give away trying to educate and entice me.

Sticking with one topic long enough to write a hundred articles about it is a first for me. There is a lot of really good information out there. For example, I recently listened to Christopher's audios created from over 40 questions from authors just like you and me. Christopher is the publisher of ezine article dot com, in case you did not know. He gives you 5 different formats with which you could write 5 different articles about the same subject matter.

In addition, he explains how you can look at the same topic from many different perspectives. I can write about article sets from the writer's perspective. I can write about them from the reader's perspective. I could even write about them from the article directories perspective. With the same basic information, I have just pounded out 3 or 4 more articles on a topic I am focused on, so all I have to do is reorganize things a little and follow the inspiration.

Finally, I can write about how article marketing relates to any topic in the world. Then I could write an article on how I would use article marketing to promote that topic. I could write about the process I would use to prepare, write and submit articles. Then I could write about what I would do with the articles after that, each one using a different product, service, interest, as they relate to their key words. And each would be an article that would help people in those areas.

The point is, once you have picked a topic, you can think about how it fits into, impacts, relates to, avoids and loves, what it would be like on vacation, what it would be like at a park. All you have to do is just put it in a different box depending on something that influences or inspires you. Then you have a unique and new article on the topic. Simple, right?

Article marketing is my favorite form of lead and subscriber and of course buyer generation. I find that article generated subscribers are a lot more serious about their business than PPC generated subscribers and other forms of advertising.

You see, with article marketing, you are selecting who gets to your web site. Well, actually they are selecting, but because you create the environment, and because on average human beings are consistent, if you create a certain type of environment, you will get a certain type of subscriber.

Think about this. How much more committed will someone be if they have read an entire article of yours, and then decided to click into your web site because they like what you say, versus someone who has just clicked (too quickly, I might add) a PPC link that has 3 lines of script? They are going to be much more highly qualified, that is for sure.

So here are some tips.

1) Write on one topic and one topic alone. Keep the title consistent with the content and keep the content consistent with the squeeze page.

2) Write expecting people to click in. I am not going to go into the psychology of this, but if you write with the attitude that people are going to want to click in from your article, generally your article will be ever so much more persuasive.

3) When people get to your squeeze page, it should be short and to the point. The reason is that they are already sold by the time they get there. Contrast that with PPC, where you probably need a longer squeeze page because they do not really know who you are and so you have to tell them.
